Adventure Time Will Continue as Comics Will Retcon the Epilogue
After ending last year, fans got another chance to explore the world ofAdventure Timein the official Season 11 comic. While the animated series ended on a happy if bittersweet climax, the world of Ooo is left forever changed. The sequel comic explores how the world changes, and how those twists affect the world of Ooo for centuries afterward.
Now, CBR is taking a look back at Sonny Liew, Ted Anderson and Marina Julia's comic, how it expands on the ending of the series and whether or nto it fits into the show's continuity.
HOW DID ADVENTURE TIME END?
The final stretch of episodes ofAdventure Timefundamentally shifted the status quo of Ooo. The malevolent Golb had come to the planet due to the actions of Betty, and tries to spread its influence across the planet. Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline and their other main allies were assembled for the war with PB's uncle Gumbald. Although the war was stopped, the army still had to contend with Golb and his influence.
In the end, Betty is able to use the powers she took from Magic Man to fuse with Golb. Fern fell apart without a body and faded away, Beemo had his screen cracked and the treehouse was destroyed. Simon Petrikov is restored to his pre-Ice King form, but Betty is forced to return to the cosmos as part of Golb. Ooo is saved, but the survivors will have to rebuild their homes. The final moments even reveal that the rest of humanity (including the robotic avatar of Finn's mother) traveling to Ooo to begin work on a colony.
WHAT HAPPENED IN ADVENTURE TIME SEASON 11?
The Season 11 comic features two distinct storylines. The first one propels Finn and Jake a thousand years into the future in an attempt to find a component to repair a damaged Beemo. There, they are greeted by the still immortal Marceline. Now serving as the Empress of Ooo, she's begun to lose her memories of the way Ooo used to be. Working with her father Hudson Aberdeen, Finn and Jake manage to bring the present-day Marceline, Bubblegum and Simon to help jog her memory. It's revealed that Bubblegum is still alive in this time period and has been exploring the world of Ooo before she returns to Marceline.
The second story focuses on Finn trying to adjust to the arrival of more humans to Ooo. The people there create Human Town, a small village where nonhumans aren't allowed to enter. Although his mother Minerva is there and tries to reconnect with her son, Finn still feels uneasy about the differences between Ooo and Human Town. He protects the village when it's attacked by a mysterious creature, but he discovers they are robots created by the humans to test if Finn would protect them. Finn decides not to live in any established location, and (with the help of his friends) builds himself a new house for himself.
IS ADVENTURE TIME SEASON 11 CANON?
Overall, theAdventure TimeSeason 11 comic both embraces and runs away from exploring the established future of Ooo. The first story features the biggest shift away from established canon, as it shows Beemo getting the crack in his screen repaired. In the flash-forward during the show's series finale, it's revealed that Beemo never got that crack repaired. Instead, in a thousand years, where he is known as the King of Ooo. There's no mention of Marceline being the Empress, or of Bubblegum still being alive and traveling the world.
However, the second story actually explores one of the most tantalizing ideas introduced during the finale. The arrival of humans on Ooo changes how Finn sees himself. He's been defined as "the last human boy" for such a long time, having a neighboring village full of them is a compelling way to see Finn change. Still dealing with the loss of Fern in the series finale, he ultimately embraces the words of his girlfriend Huntress Wizard and makes a home for himself. She even says she loves him, although she's quick to point out there are lots of kinds of love.
